I got the job!

I got the job at the Statesman! A month (to the day) after getting that initial e-mail from my former boss, I got the good news. All pending a drug test, of course. (Keep the poppy seed muffin jokes to yourself… heard that twice already today. Thanks.)

I was scheduled to work there anyway last night as a temp, and a few minutes into the shift, the sports editor asked to speak with me in a conference room. I knew it was about the job opening and the decision… any other topics of discussion would have been done out in the open. Anyways, the decision to hire me boiled down to the fact that while there were other qualified candidates, I had the most experience in the position and therefore the transition would be rather seamless for me to “get back in the saddle.” Just an expression, not his words.

I tell you, it sure is nice to have this kind of situation work in my favor for once. All too often while being unemployed, I’ve been the one who gets beat out by others who have more experience. It feels good to be on the other side this time. I’m so thankful that God worked this out the way He did.

Don’t forget, this all started with a random interaction with one of my former co-workers in January at a Switchfoot show in Portland. He told his boss about it, and told him that I was looking for work. Fast forward to August, when a sports assistant puts in his two weeks. I’m convinced that God reminded Jim (my boss) of my unemployed status. Do you have a better explanation? Why else would be e-mail me out of the blue? Several e-mails, an online application, an interview and some temp shifts later… and I’m back on staff at the Statesman Journal. I get my own access badge… no more calling the sports department to have someone let me in the building.

I know it’s not a super glamourous job… in fact, it’s only part time (20-ish hours a week) and in the evenings (goodbye social life for the most part). But it’s something and I’m very grateful. The way things worked out very much indicate that God put it all together. And, if this is what my employment situation will be when January rolls around (i.e. no other job opportunities God puts in my lap), I’ll be able to coach at Corban again. Again, it’s amazing how the Lord worked this all together and I praise God for a job.

Thanks, God.
