Job update

Today was a productive day on the job front, so I thought I’d recap. If you go back a few entries, you”ll remember that I received an e-mail out of the blue from my former employer at Statesman Journal. The gist of that info was that there might be a position opening soon and he wanted to gauge my interest.

Fast forward to now.

Right now they are using me as a paid temp/freelance worker to fill in the gaps caused by that opening. He received authority to hire a replacement a few days ago, so I have my application in the mix now for that position. In the meantime, I will be filling in here and there when they need me. Today was my first day in that capacity. I put in six hours, most of which was sitting and waiting for work to do. Slow night. But six hours is six hours… I’ll take it.

Also of note is that I interviewed with the sports editor (my former boss) before my shift today. He told me that he hasn’t looked through the half dozen or so applications he has received, but he knows that I have applied, as well as another guy who interned in the sports department. He said that the two of us essentially have the early leg up on anyone else because of our previous experience working there. But I got the impression that I might have the most experience between us, as I had more responsibilities in my time there than the other guy who interned did when we worked at the newspaper (we didn’t work there at the same time).

So the final outcome remains to be seen, but at the very least, I’ve got some temp work hours coming up in the near future.

It’s really amazing how God works things together… especially when you can go back and see the timeline of how things played out. In this case, it’s pretty amazing. I worked at the Statesman for eight months back in 2008. I quit because I was working 60+ hours a week with two jobs and I cut out the part time job. I didn’t burn bridges, and my boss said it was sad to see me go, although he understood my reason for leaving. That came into play when he needed a replacement two years later… he tracked me down. And the reason he did is because I ran into a former co-worker at the Statesman at a Switchfoot show in January. (remember this?) We chatted and I mentioned I was unemployed. He told my former boss that I was looking for work. Well, eight months later, I get an e-mail asking if I’m interested in a possible position. And a few weeks after that, I interviewed for said position and I am filling in to get a few temp hours with the possibility of being hired onto the sports staff again.

Don’t forget that this out-of-the-blue e-mail came the day after I made a commitment to trust that God would provide a job for me by saying I was done with unemployment. Amazing.

I know God provides, but for a person like me, it’s nice sometimes to see the cause and effect process… the timeline of how things work together. It’s reassuring. It’s proof that God DOES work things out. He cares about my life and the details of it. He CARES. Isn’t that amazing? I’m so thankful for a loving God and father who provides for his children.

I’ll get this job if God wants me to have it. But the way things have worked out, I can’t help but think that God has worked all this out for me to receive this job. Time will tell.
