Well, we’re two hours away from the final session of the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Unfortunately, that session will not include any Corban athletes, but that does not mean that this weekend was a waste.
The whole idea of Nationals is obviously to compete for national championships, but it’s also to better yourself while competing against some really good competition. For our program, this is a building block for the years to come. We sent some athletes who got their first taste of national-level competition and they will be able to use that to fuel their training for the future, as well as motivate their teammates to work hard to join them in the experience next year.
We had two relay teams who used that competition to improve their season bests, but each athlete was able to experience that high level of competition that you don’t typically get throughout the season. It will pay dividends for the future.
Anyways, here’s a rundown of how our athletes fared the last two days:
- The women’s 4×100 relay (Jackie Taylor, Jocelynn Smith, Eliya Kohl and Bianca Davis) improved their season best by almost half a second on Thursday. They finished 27th overall in the preliminary round with a time of 48.70.
- Jenny Harmon placed 27th in the women’s javelin on Thursday with a throw of 118 feet. It was about 10 feet short of her best throw, but all the throwers were throwing into a pretty strong head wind.
- Jocelynn Smith was 19th in the prelims of the women’s 400 hurdles on Thursday with a time of 1:05.43, which missed qualifying for the semi-finals by .04 seconds.
- David Anderson finished 21st in the prelims of the men’s 400 hurdles on Thursday at 55.43. He missed qualifying for the semi-finals by .29 seconds.
- Christy Mosier finished 23rd in the women’s shot put Friday with a heave of 41 feet, 1 inch.
- The women’s 4×400 relay (Jocelynn Smith, Bianca Davis, Emilee Grubb and Jackie Taylor) finished 18th in the semi-final round with a season best time of 3:56.48. It bettered their previous mark by over a second.
Again, it was a good weekend. Like I said earlier, this should motivate the eight athletes to work hard to make it back to this meet next May and they can try to bring along some of their teammates so they can experience this level of competition as well.
Nice work and a job well done to Corban’s group of eight national competitors.
[...] May The main thing was the trip to Nationals in Marion, Indiana, at the end of the month. We sent a sizeable group to the meet, which was great for the program. Corban’s track program is slowly growing, so to send a dozen athletes and coaches is great for the development of the program. (Read about the meet here and here) [...]
